Become A Volunteer

Visit our new state website www.maddfriendsindeed.org to learn more about volunteering and to sign up! There is one requirement to be a MADD volunteer: You must volunteer for one reason only-to support the mission of MADD. So that we can make the best match possible, all volunteers are interviewed and trained. Support and recognition comprise the management program. If you want to pursue opportunities to volunteer with MADD, you have several options:

(Community Service volunteers (required as a result of Minor in Possession, DWI or other offense), please go to #12 for more information. lf you want to volunteer after your community service requirement is satisfied, you will go through the same volunteer process as all of our volunteers.)
We have numerous ways to volunteer & get involved:
  1. Court Monitors- observe Driving While Intoxicated, Intoxication Manslaughter and Intoxication Assault court cases as they go through the criminal court process in your county. You need to be available during the weekday. You will be trained one-on-one by a victim advocate and there is a training video for you to watch. You may monitor as little or as much as you like. You will report what happens in court to our staff victim advocate.

  2. Speakers Bureau- are people who are comfortable in speaking to large and small groups such as school groups (usually high schools), PTA, church youth group, business health fair, etc. We will provide speaker training and materials to be distributed at the event. Most, though not all, speakers are victims of drunk driving who are willing to tell their stories to make an impact on the audience. Other speakers include prosecutors, police officers, emergency medical personnel and attorneys.

  3. Bilingual Volunteers- are Spanish-speaking volunteers, who will staff MADD booths at community events, distribute MADD Spanish materials and communicate MADD's message to Spanish-only speaking residents.

  4. Victim Impact Panel Speakers- are willing to tell their stories to DWI offenders at the monthly Victim Impact Panel. Volunteers will observe for at least one month and work with the Director of Victim Services in developing their stories. We need English and Spanish speaking victims.

  5. Wrecked Car Display- is towed by a company that is willing to transport one or more of our Wrecked Car Display trailers to high schools, churches, community events.

  6. Victim Advocate- is a caring volunteer, who is compassionate and wants to assist victims during the court process, provide individual support and act as an advocate. Most victim advocates are victims of drunk driving who have reached the point where they want to help other victims. Forty hour training (provided by MADD) is required. Supervision provided by Director of Victim Services.

  7. VIP Registration Volunteers- are teen or adult volunteers who will register attendees at the monthly Victim Impact Panel, on the first and third Wednesday evening of each month from 6 PM to 9 PM. Volunteers can be trained at the program.

  8. Computer Volunteers- are people who are adept at: 1) database management-to assist in maintaining membership and mailing information; and 2) web site design and maintenance-to assist in web site design and maintenance. We also need volunteers who can train staff in basic word processing and database management skills. Confidentiality required.

  9. Repeat Drunk Driving Panel Volunteers- are recovering alcoholics who are willing to share their stories at this new program specifically designed for repeat DWI offenders. We especially need remorseful intoxication manslaughter/assault offenders who have been to prison after they have been involved in death or injury crashes.

  10. Event Volunteers- want to assist at short-term events, such as MADD booths at local grocery stores, registration at the annual Recognition Event or ushers at MADD events like the annual Victim Vigil. Little training is required. Reliability is very important.

  11. Administrative Volunteers- can aid the chapter in editing newsletters, producing invitations and assisting at the chapter offices.

  12. Community Service Volunteers- (For alcohol-related offenses only) We work with local probation departments, The Volunteer Center and municipal judges by providing opportunities for completion of community service hours. CS volunteers staple red ribbons to statistics cards and rubber-band them into groups of 100. One hour credit is given for each group of 100.
