Chapter History
1982 - Present

80's: The Beginning

1982: Milo Kirk and several other victims of drunk driving in the Dallas area first formed the chapter. Milo's stepson was critically injured in a crash near Lake Texoma. Milo was a president of our chapter and later became president of the national organization of MADD. The founders of our chapter were instrumental in building relationships with the local district attorney and leaders in law enforcement. Additional chapter board members and volunteers worked hard to educate local and statewide politicians in enacting tougher laws on drunk driving.

1986: The chapter received its first Victim of Crime Act state grant, hired a victim advocate, and served victims of drunk driving in a six county area around Dallas.

1987: The chapter began to provided the highest level of victim services as authorized by MADD national victim services standards. Victim services remain the top priority of our chapter.

Early 90's: Growth

1992: The chapter hired its first executive director.

1993: The chapter hired a bilingual victim advocate. The chapter's Victim Services program received the Governor's Award for Exemplary Crime Victim Assistance Program.

Mid to late 90's: Expansion & Strategic Goals

1995: The chapter hired an administrative assistant. The chapter expanded its victim services to Tarrant County after the former Tarrant County chapter of MADD closed.

1996: The chapter board chose two strategic goals- Hispanic outreach and stabilization of victim services in Tarrant County.

1997: MADD was reorganized statewide and the chapter expanded its public awareness programs to the five-county area around Fort Worth. The chapter changed its name to "Metroplex Chapter" to better reflect our service area. A victim advocate was hired for Tarrant County and in August, the chapter opened its Fort Worth office.

1998: The chapter added technology development as a third strategic goal.

1999: The chapter added youth programs as a goal.

2000 to Present: The Present & The Future

2000: Expansion and new offices, as well as a child/teen grief program, were added. The Texas Department of Transportation (Dallas Traffic Safety Office) funded a new Underage Drinking Prevention Program for 20 Dallas area schools. The Dallas and Ft. Worth offices moved to new locations.

2004: Collin County office opened. McKinney Community Resource Office was opened.

2004: Advisory established for the Metroplex chapter

2005: New and Improved MADD-METROPLEX.ORG
